It is easy to reach Maldives by air from major cities around the world. Malé, the capital city, has an international airport located on the island of Hulhule. Also available are regular flights connecting Maldives to Colombo (Sri Lanka), Thiruvananthapuram (India), and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). In the peak season, several air carriers offer chartered flights from countries in Europe.

The Malé International Airport, located on Hulhule Island, has all the modern facilities of a fullfledged world class airport. Located a little over a kilometre from the capital city, it can handle the largest of aircraft. The airport is well connected to most of the islands and resorts by seaplanes, speedboats and dhonis. Among the amenities and services available at Hulhule are:

  4. Tax-free shops in both terminals.

The Maldivian currency is the Rufiyaa (MRF) in notes and Laaree coins. One rufiyaa equals 100 Laarees. The exchange rate is one USD to MRF12.85. Rufiyaa is available in denominations of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 5005. The US dollar is the most commonly used foreign currency. You can make payments at hotels and resorts in cash, credit cards or traveller's cheques. Among widely accepted credit cards are Master Card, VISA, Diners Club, Euro card and JCB.
   

Maldives has an advanced, reliable communication system based on the latest technology including international satellites. It is managed by DHIRAAGU, the Maldives national telecommunications company and ISP (Internet Service Provider), which also provides, fax and pager services, besides cyber cafes.

Also available are IDD (international direct dialling) telephone facilities and car phones at most of the resorts and on inhabited islands. You can get GSM mobile phones on daily rental basis, as also Internet connectivity, through DHIRAAGU. Phone services are also available aboard cruise vessels.
   
The weekend in Maldives falls on Friday and Saturday, which are official holidays. Banking hours from Sunday to Thursday: 0800 to 1330. Business hours, Sunday through Thursday: 0730 to 1430 (government sector) and 0900 to 1700 (private sector).
